From The Mayor's Desk

September 28, 2016

At the regular City Council meeting held September 12 the pledge was recited, minutes were approved, guests were greeted and there was no correspondence.

There were three visitors.

There was no sheriff’s report.

The Council talked about a new water project. It is in limbo now according to Mayor Stiles as it is waiting for Rural Development. He said that Big Sandy may not know the particulars of the project until December or January for a time frame.

A water user talked to the Council, thinking that her water bill was too high. The Council adjusted it down a slight bit.

Mayor Stiles wanted to remind water users that if you have a running toilet that will use 40,000 to 50,000 gallons of water a month. A drippy faucet with a drip every second will equal 10.000 gallons of water a month. If people do not take care of those issues, they are going to have high water bills.

The Montana Rural Water Meeting looked at Big Sandy water wells and other things too make sure that the Big Sandy system is adequate in case of floods. They will be talking later about what can be done better.

Mayor Stiles said that the Council is working with Hillary Page to develop a web site for the City.

The Council looked at MMIA Benefits Program, trying to get employee insurance. MMIA has different packages of insurance coverage. The City has come up with nothing definite yet.

The City is still waiting for gravel to get to work on the streets later this fall. It looks to Mayor Stiles that the gravel should arrive in the next couple weeks.

Now the City has to change out about ten to twelve water meters yet. The good news is that the City has stockpiled about 48 new meters so when one needs changing, they will have one to use. That took some planning ahead since the meters take about three months to get to Big Sandy once ordered.

Probably the big news of the night was that the City ordered four speed radar signs that will tell the speed limit and how fast the automobile passing the sign is going. Two will be put close to the cross walk on US 87. Another will be used close to the Fireman’s

See Page 3: Mayor Park on Main Street and the fourth is being paid for cooperatively by the City and the school and will be used close to the school.

This winter the City is going to be rewriting the sewer and water codes. They need to be written so that people cannot just pay a little on their water and sewer bill and not get it shut off because when it finally does get shut off, it can be as much as six hundred dollars and creates a hardship for the customers and for the City who has no choice but to shut off their water.

There were no special reports.

Claims and vouchers were paid and the meeting was adjourned. The next regular meeting will be October 12, 2016

Mayor Stiles wanted residents to know that the public is welcome at a joint City and school swimming pool meeting. It will be at the high school computer room, October 13 at 6pm.
