The Pioneers face some talented competition over the weekend as District 9C conference play got underway. Friday they welcomed the Fort Benton Longhorns to town and Saturday hosted the Chinook Sugarbeeters.

On the girls side it was a challenging weekend facing to of the top teams in the conference right out of the gate. The Longhorns opened a six point lead 17-11 to start the contest as Big Sandy matched the intensity early.

A 24-4 run in the second quarter separated the teams by halftime but that didn't stop the girls from competing hard. In the end it was Fort Benton earning a 71-28 victory over the Pioneers. Caitlyn Bailey led the Pioneers in scoring.

The boys contest was a back and forth affair with the Pioneers holding a slim two point advantage 11-9 after eight minutes and a 19-18 lead entering halftime.

Big Sandy pushed the lead to 35-32 by the start of the fourth quarter but the Longhorns were able to battle back and force overtime eventually winning the contest 64-62.

Big Sandy was led by the efforts of senior Bryant Jones who led all scorers with 38 points.

Saturday it was the Chinook Sugarbeeters controlling the action in both contests as the Pioneer girls fell 44-18 while the boys were defeated 74-38.

Sophomore Jaylyn Cline paced the girls effort with five points while Jones again led the Pioneer boys with 17. Senior Laurence Allderdice added 15 in the contest

The Pioneers will host Hays/Lodge Pole tomorrow night to close out 2016 and return to the court January 5 when they travel to Box Elder to take on the Bears.
