Pioneers fall to Denton-Geyser-Stanford, Hays/Lodge Pole in weekend action

The High School basketball season has just two weeks remaining in its regular season schedule heading into the District 9C Tournament February 15-18.

The Pioneer boys and girls currently hold the number eight seed heading into the tournament following a pair of weekend losses to the Denton-Geyser-Stanford Bearcats and the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds over the weekend.

The girls trailed the Bearcats 11-8 early and were competitive throughout the contest but saw the lead grow each quarter of a 51-28 non conference loss.

Senior Caitlyn Baily paced the Pioneer attack with nine points, sophomore Jaylyn Cline added eight in defeat.

Saturday faced the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds in a conference clash that saw the Pioneers match the Thunderbirds step for step at times in the contest.

The Thunderbirds opened a 15-5 lead early. Big Sandy played very well the next 16 minutes trimming the deficit to 41-34 entering the fourth quarter. The final eight minutes resembled the first with the Thunderbirds outscoring Big Sandy down the stretch 15-6 to earn a 56-40 victory.

Junior Jenna Leader led the way with 10 points for the Pioneers.

The boys also dropped a non conference clash with the Bearcats falling 54-35. Individually scoring was not provided to the Mountaineer at press time.

Saturday the boys took on the top team in the District 9C facing Hays/Lodge Pole. The Thunderbirds led 33-7 after one quarter and 58-15 at intermission en-route to a 81-28 victory over Big Sandy. Junior Bryant Jones led the Pioneers with 17 points in the contest.
