Pioneers head to District 9C Tournament: Girls start Wednesday, Boys, Thursday

The Big Sandy Pioneer basketball teams concluded the regular season this past weekend. The Pioneer boys picked up a 72-54 win over the Turner Tornadoes and fell 64-38 to the North Star Knights. The girls dropped a pair of contest to the Tornadoes 56-38 and to the Knights 71-40.

In the boys win over Turner it was again junior Bryant Jones leading the way. Jones poured in 41 points for the second weekend in a row. Jones scored eight first quarter points, knocked down a triple in the second, added 17 more in the third quarter, finishing with 13 in the fourth. Jones sank 17 field goals in all including seven from long range.

Freshman Ryan Roth added nine points with a first quarter triple mixed in and freshman Brock Prouix added eight.

Junior Jenna Leader paced the girls efforts. Leader scores 17 against Turner and followed up with 15 in the finale against North Star.

The District 9C Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament begins today with the girls taking center stage. The boys will begin play Thursday.

The girls open with Box Elder today at 1:00 p.m. the boys begin tournament play against Chinook Thursday at 4 p.m.
