Bear Paw Meanderings

If it takes a village to raise a child, it certainly takes that village to make its schools the best that they can be.

That happened with the Big Sandy schools and with Big Sandy High School as well.

Probably the most important story I have had a hand in writing since I have been writing for “The Mountaineer” is the story that reported that Big Sandy High School took home a bronze medal for being one of the top 25 high schools in Montana.

I hope that the community realizes what an honor that is and all the schools, some that take huge amounts of money to run, who were not even in the running.

And Big Sandy does it without even a voted mill levy most years.

Small schools are well represented in the top twenty-five schools that were on that survey. It just goes to show that teachers with a small teacher to student ratio works and in a small school it is difficult not to graduate. There are just too many people working hard to see that all students in a small school graduate and for that matter those same teachers make sure that students do well on standardized testing.

That is not all that went into Big Sandy bringing home the bronze. It takes a great school board, great administrative team, great teachers, great staff, great students, great parents and most of all a community who at all times gives huge support to its school.

That’s what happened in Big Sandy and look at the reward! Graduating from Big Sandy High School is an honor and indicates that the graduates will have an easier job in their lives after high school because of going to school here in Big Sandy.
