The Big Sandy Mountaineer -

The Big sandy Pioneer volleyball team experienced all ends of the sporting spectrum this week falling to Box Elder and North Star in District 6C-East play and then winning their pool and finishing second at the Chester-J-I Mid-Season volleyball tournament.

The Pioneers and Bears battled to five sets in their first match of the season but last Thursday it was the Bears that controlled the flow of the contest winning in three sets 25-14, 25-22 and 25-18. Georgia Wortman led the attack with five kills, Lainey Gregory recorded eight assists.

Friday Big Sandy faced a familiar foe in the North Star Knights. The Knights are undefeated and sit atop the District 6C-East. Big Sandy did some nice things on the night. After dropping the opening set 25-15 the Pioneers bounced back an took set number two from the Knights 25-18. North Star did win sets three and four to win the match 3-1 but it certainly was a step in the right direction for the girls.

Jaylyn Cline slammed home eight kills in the match and Gregory set up the hitters with 15 assists.

Saturday the team headed to Chester to take part in the Hawks annual mid-season tournament where they would face Sunburst and the Box Elder JV in Pool Play. The Pioneers defeated the Refiners 25-19. 25-21 and the Bears JV 25-7, 25-16 to advance the Championship match against the host Hawks.

In the chipper it was the Hawks besting Big Sandy 25-22, 25-16. It was a good showing for the Big Sandy girls in Chester picking up a couple of wins along the way.
