  • Thoughts with Zoe

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 31, 2021

I find it strange myself. So it's ok if you do too. Easter is only a few days away, and writing a movie review as a way to celebrate Easter just isn't done. I clearly know that Walt Disney movies are not spiritual truth personified, but this one, "Raya and The Last Dragon," speaks truth to me nonetheless. When is the right time to say hope is possible and trust, although it may be challenging to find, possible to practice. I have had too many discussions with community members in person and...

The Mountaineer encourages shopping at home, and Lehman’s True Value Hardware is the closed hardware store we have. • Priorities of articles

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 17, 2021

My granddaughter, Dorothea, inspired this article. She and I were driving home when she said, "You own the Mountaineer. It is a very important job." And without skipping a beat, she told me after she was through with grade school and high school that she wanted to own the Mountaineer. "I know how to be a boss! I know how to make decisions." I asked her if she was the boss right now what would be put in the paper. After thinking a bit, she said, "More pictures of kids!" The question of what to...

  • Rotary-Commitment to the Community

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 17, 2021

It's been a big project updating the cemeteries records into digital data. "Three years ago, we thought we could get it done between the Rotary banquet and Memorial Day. They laughed, "we're still working on it." They are about 50% done, but the last 50% will go quickly because the newer gravesites are easier to verify. "We feel very good about everything to this point. It's very accurate." They have been meeting Thursday afternoons. I asked if it was fun, and they said, "Yes. It's interesting!"...

Luke from KLJ presented to the city council the...

Life is often hard. It's ok to learn that early. This year the Big Sandy Lady Pioneers lost every basketball game, and the Big Sandy Boy lost a game they wanted to win at the end. I loved watching both teams and am so proud of their improvement! The Big Sandy Pioneers who went to state in wrestling lost at state and did not place. The funny thing is in sports, very few know the feeling of winning at the end-most lose. But in losing, there are so many lessons learned; it's essential to discover...

  • Surgical screws for the body

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 3, 2021

(Editor's note: I am not a medical journalist, so this article is an elementary introduction to the subject.) Recently my son fell from a ladder and broke his wrist, and although I was aware of the subject of screws and plates in the body, the picture of his surgery intrigued me. So I did some research on the internet about the subject. Surgical screws are made of titanium or high-grade surgical stainless steel. The sizes of the screw can span vary from .06 inches to .29 inches, depending on the...

    Zoe Merrill|Jan 27, 2021

The first time I ate one of Mary Merrill's baking creations was at her wedding. She wanted to make her wedding cake along with a variety of decadent desserts. I discouraged her, but she insisted anyway. She found herself completing her cake the morning of the wedding. So I am excited to announce you'll all be able to taste her skill at creating delicious pastries now. Black Granary Handcrafted is a custom order pastry and bakery shop. Mary offers a wide variety of handcrafted small-batch...

  • Tester's new book and his experience at the Capital building last week

    Zoe Merrill|Jan 13, 2021

What was your reason for writing Grounded? "I just thought after the election that I had in 2018 that the time to write it was then. There were so things that I had seen in the Democrat party which was not voting well for the party in the middle of America." Arron Murphy was his former media person when he first got to the Senate and former chief of staff. They sat down and talked about Tester's ideals. They talked about what would be beneficial to folks on both sides of the aisle. "I hope,...

  • Christmas is a wonderful time to give

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 30, 2020

Christmas is a wonderful time to give, but sometimes the gifts we give are more than a purchased item. Sometimes as LeRita McKeever said, "We need to have something to give back to the community. They were made with a lot of love and prayers." Six women have sewn together every Monday for many years. This year they made 13 large lap quilts for individuals at the Big Sandy Medical Center Nursing Home. The six ladies call themselves, "Sew on and Sew Forth." They are Ann Quinn, Reggie Jappe, Gwen...

  • Big Sandy School Board met to discuss and finalize a letter of approval

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 30, 2020

I attended the School Board meeting on the internet, which is available to anyone who would like to participate in the meeting and not attend. This is a great option. Thankfully I was reminded by Darin Genereux to turn off my microphone. Guests can only make a brief statement before the agenda items, after which we can only watch and listen to the board. First on the agenda is Parker Proulx, the representative from the student council. He told the board that the student council was having a small fundraiser, selling Christmas Candy Canes with...

  • Thoughts with Zoe

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 30, 2020

The year 2020 was a "no good very bad year." But I'm a half-full kind of girl, so I choose to look at the year differently. I ponder thoughts like what can we learn from the year? How can I change to make any other year better? There are things I've learned, like it doesn't take much for neighbors and friends to be frustrated with one another, people I never thought would raise their voice. It has taught me how to love and support those who totally disagree with me. I have learned to study...

Two weeks ago, Thomas and Heather Dilworth purchased the Big Sandy Organics, a local business, from Bob and Ann Quinn. Heather said, "The Kamut is an awesome product. We hope to bring on some other healthy snacks, a different variety of snacks, and expand in the lentils, chickpeas, and add a couple of flavors." In the meantime, they have added a whole second lever in the shop, doubling their space. In their future, they hope to add a little retail front to the shop. They are working towards and...
