The Big Sandy varsity boys and girls basketball teams played a pair of District 9C games this past weekend against the Turner Tornadoes and the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks.

Friday the girls fell to the Turner Tornadoes 62-20. The team played hard throughout and were paced offensively by junior Jaylyn Cline with six points, senior Andrea Rutledge added five in the contest.

The Pioneers boys started strong against the Tornadoes taking a 42-32 lead into halftime. Sophomore Brock Proulx scored 13 first half points while sophomore Ryan Roth torched the nets for 11 as Big Sandy built their lead.

Turner outscored Big Sandy 23-10 in the third quarter to take the lead 55-52.

Big Sandy was unable to regain the momentum down the stretch falling to the Tornadoes 74-65.

Roth knocked down a pair from downtown and scored 22 points while Proulx finished with 18.

Saturday the girls fell to the Chester/J-I Hawks 62-20. Cline again led the team with nine points on the night.

The boys fell behind early trailing 19-16 after one quarter and 42-34 at the half. Chester/J-I pushed the lead to 60-45 entering the fourth quarter.

Coaches all want their kids to play hard for all four quarters and Big Sandy did just that. The Pioneers outscored the Hawks 17-10 down the stretch but fell in the end to the Hawks 70-62.

Roth tallied 23 points in the contest while sophomore Clint Darlington scored 21. Proulx added 18 and freshman Kade Strutz scored 14.

Big Sandy will return to the court this weekend with home games against Chinook on Friday and Fort Benton on Saturday.
