According to the grade school students Earth Day is the "best day" of the year. They get to go outside and walk around town for an afternoon and clean up Big Sandy. It was such a wonderful afternoon. According to one kid, it was more fun last year, because they got to go all over town and this year they had to stay on one street. I drove around town to find different groups of classes picking up all over the town. They allowed me to take their picture, actually they hammed it up!

Earth Day was originally formed in 1970, but if you look at Genesis God's first commandment was to take care of the earth. Spring is always a good time to pick up after ourselves. This year the snow covered the garbage for quite a while. It doesn't take long, you get good exercise, and after filling a garbage bag full you feel like you've accomplished something. The kids felt good about their efforts. One first grade boy said, "have you seen the piles of garbage in the ocean? That's people's stuff. They should pick up after themselves."

This year Rotary bought, at a reduced price, trees from Rivers Edge to give to the grade school students. Also, Katie Hanson's class planted tomatoes donated by Laurie Hanson from Down Town Garden in Havre. The Grocery Store supplied all the students with plastic gloves and an ice-cream treat after working in the sun all day.
