Tucker Taylor Loves History and Big Sandy

October 3, 2018

Tucker Taylor is the new social studies teacher at Big Sandy High School. He graduated from the University of Montana Western in Dillion with a Bachelor's Degrees in Modern History and Social Studies. Tucker has spent the last two years being a substitute teacher in Sheridan and Belgrade, Montana.

While he was going to school at Western he was the Assistant Wrestling Coach at Dillion for four years. Last year he was the Assistant coach at Belgrade.

"I chose history when I was younger because my dad and I shared a passion and love for history." Tucker got his love of history through his father. "He would tell stories. He specialized in the civil war and history of the American West. We would watch video's, the History Channel and then some European history with Vikings and English Knights and the feudal system. The Dark Ages.... So, I got a lot of exposure when I was younger. It was always something I could excel because it was easy for me to get good grades in history because I liked it."

He helps with Pioneer Football as an Assistant Coach and as a line judge for the Pioneer Volleyball teams. He will also be the Pioneer Wrestling coach this year. "I'm hoping to have two/three wrestlers this year. And there is a bunch of little ones coming up. I think it's important for high school programs to be connected to the little guys program. I spent two years coaching the little guys in Dillion too. So, I do have experienced coaching the little guys."

He is single, but he has been extremely busy since moving here. "Both my parents are from small towns. My mom is from Sheridan, Montana and my dad is from Circle, Montana. Being in the Gallatin Valley the last 20 years of my life and it was just getting too big. And teaching in those large environments like Belgrade I feel there are more problems that go unsolved. When you teach smaller groups of students those problems get solved. In the bigger places, it's just glossed over. I really like small settings. Belgrade and Bozeman are just too big!"

"Since this is my first stand-alone class I'm looking forward to becoming a better teacher. The kids are really good kids. I really like them. I'm getting to know all the kids." History is too often viewed as boring. Tucker is hoping to teach the kids that history can be exciting.

"I'm a big outdoors guy. I like hunting and fishing, so that's another reason why I am excited to be here." Big Sandy is good fit for Tucker Taylor.
