What a Start! Big Sandy Girls, Boys sweep Dutton/Brady and Augusta to begin season 2-0

It has been some time since the Big Sandy Pioneers could say that both the boys and girls basketball teams began the season 2-0, but they did just that this past weekend.

The girls picked up a 42-27 win over the Dutton/Brady Diamondbacks on Friday led by junior Amanda Cline's 14 points. Saturday the girls walloped Augusta 68-44 as Cline scored 19 and junior Lainey Gregory added 17.

The Big Sandy boys ignited memories of the Pioneers 2013 State Tournament run with just five players in the books. Junior Ryan Roth tossed in 28 points to help Big Sandy top Dutton/Brady 67-46 in the season opener and then scored 29 on Saturday in their 82-28 pounding of Augusta.

Friday night the girls, now under the direction of first year coach Naomi Terry, took a few minutes to get their feet underneath them. The Pioneers trailed 12-6 entering the second quarter but after getting a pair of triples and seven points from junior Amanda Cline and six points from freshman Amiya Griffith the Big Sandy girls held a 20-18 lead heading into halftime.


Senior Jaylyn Cline and junior Seanna Demontiny each connected from beyond the Arc helping Big Sandy extend their lead to 28-22 entering the fourth quarter of action.

Big Sandy tallied 13 in the final stanza while allowing just five to seal a 42-27 season opening win. Cline paced the offensive effort with 14 markers while junior Lainey Gregory and Griffith each added eight.

Saturday in their contest with Augusta Gregory knocked a first quarter three down and scored six points while Amanda Cline made herself comfortable at the charity stripe connecting on five of six to help Big Sandy take a early 15-6 lead.


Jaylyn Cline scored six in the second and Amanda added five more as Big Sandy doubled up Augusta 30-15 at the break.

Amanda connected twice from long range in the third to continue the Pioneer onslaught. Big Sandy led 46-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

Gregory notched 9 markers in the final stanza and Jaylyn contributed six more providing the Pioneers with a comfortable 68-44 win and a 2-0 start to the young season. Amanda Cline finished with 19 while Gregory add 17 and Jaylyn 16 in the win.

Head Coach Thomas Dilworth played just five players over the weekend and the Pioneers walked away with a pair of comfortable wins.

Friday the boys jumped out to a 15-6 lead after eight minutes against the Dutton/Brady Diamondbacks. Junior Ryan Roth and sophomore Parker Proulx each connected from down town in the first.

Roth converted all six of his free throw attempts in the second and scored 12 of the Pioneers 19 giving Big Sandy a 34-15 halftime lead.

Sophomore Kade Strutz scored five in the third quarter and Roth added 10 more in the fourth as Big Sandy cruised to a 69-46 season opening win.

Roth finished with 29 in the contest. Parker Proulx added 15, Brock Proulx 13 and Strutz finished with 12.

Saturday the Pioneers stepped on the gas early and never looked back. Big Sandy began the game with an offensive flurry that saw the Pioneers score 30 in the opening quarter. Roth scored 12 in the first quarter and Parker added eight.

Roth knocked down a triple and added 12 more in the second allowing the Pioneers to put things on cruise control the remainder of the contest after taking a 52-16 lead into halftime.

Brock Proulx, junior Jeremiah Genereux and Strutz would each connect from long range in the third quarter. Genereux would add another from long range in the fourth as Big Sandy walked away with a 82-28 win.

Roth score 18 in game number two, Brock added 24 for the Pioneers. Strutz tallied 12 and Genereux 10 for the Pioneers. Parker rounded out the scoring with eight in the contest.

Big Sandy will return to the court the Friday for their home opener against the Fort Benton Longhorns. Saturday the Pioneers will welcome the Chinook Sugarbeeters to town.

The Pioneers will close out 2018 with road trip, Friday December 21 to take on the Denton/Geyser-Stanford Bearcats. Saturday, December 22 the team will be home to take on the Hay/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds.

Big Sandy will return to the court in the new year on Friday, January 4 when the will host North Star.
