Pioneer freshman Amiya Griffith gets fouled going to the basket in the contest against the Bearcats

Pioneer girls start strong but fall in losses to Denton/Geyser-Stanford & Hays/Lodge Pole

The first portion of the high school basketball season comes to a close with the Pioneers on the road Friday to take on the Denton/Geyser-Stanford Bearcats in a non-conference clash. The boys would pick up the win in overtime, topping the Bearcats 57-54. The girls played well and stayed close early, to a very good Bearcats team before falling in the end 44-25. Friday both squads would fall in tough contest against the visiting Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds. The girls were defeated 56-49 and the boys 79-63.

In Denton the boys trailed 7-4 after eight minutes but an offensive outburst in the second saw the teams putting the ball in the basket but it was the Bearcats that held a 25-24 advantage at the break.

The Pioneers took the lead by the end of the third quarter 39-37 but the Bearcats were able to even the score at the end of regulation 48-48 to force overtime. In the extra session junior Jeremiah Genereux knocked down a triple and junior Brock Proulx scored three points to help Big Sandy scratch out a 57-54 win. Junior Ryan Roth paced the offense with 19 points while Proulx added 17.

Saturday the boys played well and trailed the Thunderbirds 29-23 at the break but Hays/Lodge Pole was able to separate themselves in the third quarter before securing a 79-63 win over Big Sandy. Roth tossed in 28 points in the contest.

For the girls it was a trying weekend. The team is coming along well and is definitely getting better. Friday they took on a Bearcat team that has a few quality wins under their belt. Big Sandy was able to stay close through three quarters but down the stretch the Bearcats pulled away for a 44-25 win. Senior Jaylyn Cline led the effort with 10 points.

Saturday against the Thunderbirds it was the same story as they again were able to in reach for much of the contest but lost ground the closing minutes. The Pioneers fell 56-49 to Hays/Lodge Pole with junior Lainey Gregory leading the charge with 15 points. Cline added 11.

"We just have to finish. Have a good three quarters, just gotta learn how to finish that fourth quarter," said Head Coach Naomi Terry. "We are getting there, we are competing and the girls are buying in. We have a lot to work on, but we are getting there"
