Big Sandy Boys win streak hits 4 after topping Turner 57-51 & Chester/J-I 49-43

January 16, 2019

Sophomore Parker Prolix lets a jumper go in the key during first half action in the Pioneers win over the Hawks. The teams will be on the road this week to face Fort Benton and Chinook.

Girls fall to Turner 68-34 Friday, Chester/J-I 34-32 on Saturday.

The Big Sandy boys basketball team has yet to lose in 2019 and have now won four straight to begin the new year. Saturday they defeated the Turner Tornadoes on the road 57-51, Saturday they got past the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks 49-43.

The girls played hard but finding the win column has been difficult thus far. Friday they lost to Turner 68-34 and Saturday lost a nail biter 34-32 to Chester/J-I.

Friday the Pioneers went to Turner to take on the Tornadoes. In boys action Big Sandy got off to a fast start opening up a 20-11 lead through eight minutes of action.

Junior Brock Proulx had his offense working in high gear early on, scoring 12 points. Junior Ryan Roth kept the defense honest by knocking down a pair of triples to help Big Sandy open up the nine point lead.

Roth continued his hot shooting from long distance in the second quarter with his third and fourth trifecta's of the first half. Big Sandy took a 32-22 lead into halftime.

The Tornadoes and Pioneers would see each others defense control the flow of the game in the third quarter. The Pioneers would manage one more bucket in the stanza to extend their lead to 43-31 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

Roth hit another from beyond the arc and Proulx added a triple of his own down the stretch for the Pioneers as they managed to hold off a determined Tornado squad and secure a 57-51 win.

The Pioneers were led in the contest by Proulx's 25 points Roth added five three point bombs and 21 points to help extend Big Sandy's win streak to three.

Saturday the boys were back at home to take on the Hawks of Chester/Joplin-Inverness and complete the first half of the District 9C schedule.

Big Sandy again took control again early on and held a four point advantage, 13-9 heading into the second getting four points from Proulx and four more from sophomore Kade Strutz to go along with a Roth three pointer.

Strutz added five more in the second quarter to help the Pioneers push the lead to seven, 23-16 at the halftime break.

The Pioneers and Hawks matched each other point for point in the third quarter with each scoring 11. Proulx was a force again for the Pioneers after halftime, scoring nine of the teams points in the stanza.

The pace picked up a bit down the stretch with the offense putting more pressure on the defense and attacking the rim. Big Sandy managed to make enough free throws to hold off any comeback from the Hawks and secure a 49-43 win.

Proulx finished with 16 in the game while Strutz added 15.

The Pioneer girls got off to a slow start in Turner, trailing 21-4 after one quarter. The score 13 in the second but still trailed 38-17 at the break.

Turner would maintain the momentum to start the second half, extending the lead to 51-19 after three and 68-34 at games end.

Senior Jaylyn Cline paced the team with 17 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter.

Saturday they were looking for a solid effort at home against the Hawks. The girls played well and had a chance to win late.

The Hawks led just 7-6 at halftime and outscored Big Sandy 12-11 in the third to take a two point lead, 19-17 into the fourth.

Junior Amanda Cline knocked down a pair of triples and scored eight down the stretch but it wasn't enough as Chester/J-I maintained their two point advantage to win 34-32.

At the midway point of the conference schedule the Big Sandy boys have won four straight and sit at 4-3 in District 9C play and 7-3 overall. With their strong start to 2019 they have moved into fourth place in the conference one game back of the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds.

The girls won their first two games of the season at the Chester pre-season tip-off tournament but haven't found the win column in conference play and stand at 0-7 in the District 9C and 2-8 overall.

The teams will flip the schedule and play each team again, switching home and away locations.

The Pioneers will be in Fort Benton on Friday and in Chinook on Saturday.
