January 23, 2019

Eighth grader Laynee Ophus makes a strong move to the basket in Fort Benton Friday night.

The Big Sandy Pioneer girls and boys basketball teams began the second half of the district 9C conference schedule this past weekend. Unfortunately the results remained the same.

Friday the girls and boys were in Fort Benton to take on the Longhorns. Big Sandy fell in the girls contest 69-20 and were defeated in the boys game 67-53. Saturday in Chinook the girls lost 44-24 while the boys suffered a 70-39 setback.

In Fort Benton junior Lainey Gregory dropped in a pair of three point buckets to lead the team with six points. Junior Amanda Cline also scored six in the contest.

Saturday in Chinook the Pioneers fell behind 10-2 early but showed a lot of resilience battling their way back. Amanda Cline knocked down four attempts from the charity stripe and eighth grader Laynee Ophus converted an old fashioned three point play to bring Big Sandy back within one 10-9.

The Pioneers would take the lead 11-10 on a offensive rebound and score from senior Jaylyn Cline. Chinook would rally though and pull away for a 44-24 victory over the Pioneers. Gregory again led the team with seven points.

On the boys side of things the Pioneers were riding a four game win streak and were on the road to face the Districts top two teams.

Friday in Fort Benton the boys played very well early on and headed into the second quarter even at 10-10. The Longhorns took a 11 point advantage into the halftime locker, 35-24 but the Pioneers continued to play hard.

Fort Benton would ad three points to their lead in the third quarter and the teams played even in the fourth leading to a 67-53 Longhorn win.

Junior Ryan Roth led the team with 19 points in the contest. Junior Brock Proulx added 15 and sophomore Kade Strutz 10 for the Pioneers.

Saturday against the undefeated Sugarbeeters the Pioneers took their best shot but trailed 14-6 at the end of the first and 35-18 by intermission.

The 'Beeters extended their lead to 57-28 at the end of three and won 70-39.

Big Sandy got a solid effort from Roth as the junior scored 22 points on the night including one from beyond the arc and 13-14 from the free throw line.

The Pioneers will be home this Friday To take on Denton/Geyser/Stanford and on the road Saturday to face the Thunderbirds in Hays.
