MSU Central Agricultural Research Center (CARC) and MSU Extension will be hosting a field day on the Highwood Bench on Wednesday, June 26, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The field day will take place approximately one mile east of the Long farm on 1221 Shonkin Road.
Dr. Luther Talbert (MSU Spring Wheat Breeder) will cover spring wheat varieties at the test plot, and provide producers with an update of his spring wheat breeding program.
Joe Jensen (MSU Graduate Student under Jamie Sherman) will cover barley varieties and share acidic soil research projects relative to barley.
Simon Fordyce (CARC Researcher) will talk about cereal, pea and canola plots, which have been seeded in low pH soil to determine tolerance to soil acidity.
Dr. Jed Eberly (CARC Assistant Professor Agronomy & Soil Microbiology) will give a brief update of his research on acid tolerant soil microbes.
Dr. Clain Jones, (MSU Extension Soil Fertility Specialist and Professor of Nutrient Management) will discuss statewide extent of problem (now at 23 counties), outreach efforts, and possible prevention and mitigation. Dr. Jones will present results from Rick Engel’s research on Lime and Phosphorus trials.
Dale Krause (Chouteau County CD) and Tyler Lane (MSU Extension) will teach participants how to use pH meters. The Chouteau County Conservation District will have pH meters for sale at half price for those who are interested.
