Getting By

March 17, 2021

With the “spring forward” of the clocks this past weekend, it is a good reminder to give some attention to those forgotten, yet important household tasks which may be overdue.

An important one to start with is your fire alarms. While testing the fire alarm with the test button is the first thing you should do, it is also important to check the date of manufacture and replace fire alarms if older than 10 years from the manufacture date. Even though the test button works, it is only confirming the battery and alarm alert system is functioning--it does not mean the smoke sensor is working. The sensors do lose their sensitivity over time.

Here are a few more tasks you may have forgotten:

*Check or replace the battery in Carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. CO detectors also expire. They typically only last 5-7 years. Be sure to check the expiration date and replace if the date has passed.

*If you have fire extinguishers, check the pressure and expiration date on them.

*Check and replace or clean furnace, air conditioner, vacuum, range and humidifier filter(s).

*Clean exhaust fans and screens. Do not forgot the stove exhaust fan and screen.

*Clean clothes dryer vent.

*Refrigerators run more efficiently by keeping them cleaned out, inside and outside. Use vinegar to clean the shelves, drawers and the gasket around the door. Do not forget about cleaning the condenser coils and defrost the freezer.

*And the dreaded oven. If it is not self-cleaning, try using a fumeless cleaning product and follow the guidelines on using the product. Plan to clean the oven on a day when you can have some windows open for air circulation.

*Vacuum and rotate your mattresses. Do not forget about the pillows too.

*Take your expired or unused prescription medications to your local pharmacy for proper disposal.

While the time change may not be your favorite part of the year, take this time as a reminder to do some spring cleaning and refresh your living environment.
