School Board met July 19

July 27, 2022

The Board of Trustees held a regular meeting on July 19. After the pledge Chairman Genererux introduced the new superintendent, Dan, and asked if he would like to say a few words. Dan Schrock asked, "What can we do for the kids?" It's all about that question. He invited anyone to reach out to him to ask questions or visit about any concerns.

He has been using most of his time recruiting teachers. Mr. Schrock has made numerous contacts with various schools. He did mention that he has three interviews, and hopefully, by Monday, he will have two more teachers. There will be a board meeting to hire new teachers, but it will be held after the Mountaineer has gone to print.

Dan Schrock went on to mention mentioned maintenance projects. The basketball floor will be dry and finished in two weeks. The elementary kitchen equipment is being put in, and it will be completed. He wanted to mention Tavie Wortman and Severin Heimbigner for working so hard for the district this summer. Dan would like to get bids for the tennis court, allowing a more usable surface. After the storm, he looked for damage from the storm. Dan mentioned and thanked the people who worked on fixing the football field track.

Travis Baumann reported that all teachers' and students' devices had been updated.

With the new variant of COVID, the Model Safe Return to School is still good for us to go. There has been some state-wide discussion about changes to the protocol, but nothing has changed so far.

The Pool Committee was there to discuss with the school board the legality of the lease. It will be a couple of months before Fish Wildlife and Park gets back to us about the grant, but they need an agreement quickly. The lease will be for at least 25 years.

Maryetta Engle said there were four small findings in the audit report. All of them were dealing with a different approach to inputting data.

Rotary will be working with the school on the baseball fields.

Obsolete Kitchen Equipment will be going up for sale.

Job description for a Transportation Director. Dan called other districts with this position to compare wording.

They voted to do some work on the high school parking lot. It has been five years since it was done.

August 16 will be the final budget meeting @ 7:00.

They have 22 substitute teachers listed. They were all approved.

Athletic Director, Melanie Schwarzbach said they would be holding a player parent meeting on August 9 and are considering using a program for all athletes found at 4D ATHLETES.COM.

School Principal Heather Wolery discussed the data compiled about school absenteeism and tardy data in the Big Sandy schools. They will be looking at trying to have a better year.

Dan mentioned he would be sending weekly reports to board members.

The board reviewed several Montana School Board Association (MTSBA) policies. These are usually a result of legal challenges or changes in the law. It took considerable time to review. Maryetta emailed them to the board members before the meeting. It was over 350 pages they had to read.
