Big Sandy opened the 2022 football season with a 46-6 romping of White Sulphur Springs on Friday night. Kody Strutz put together a string of impressive runs on the opening drive of the game, before capping it off with a 24 yard touchdown reception. The defense quickly overwhelmed the Hornets offense, resulting in an early punt. The Pioneers quickly cashed in on another quick drive with Wylee Snapp catching a 5 yard touchdown pass from Braydon Cline. After another impressive defensive stand, Cline's next touchdown pass would find Lane Demontiney in the end zone after a 60 yard connection putting the Pioneers up 22-0 with 4:15 left in the opening quarter. Big Sandy would finish off an impressive first quarter performance with senior tailback Rusty Gasvoda blasting into the end zone on a 1 yard rush.

Senior, Lance Rutledge (55), making his move.

The Pioneer defense stifled any attempts by the Hornets offense to get anything going. Junior safety Cooper Taylor led the defense with 9.5 tackles while Gasvoda, Cline, and Baumann all notched a sack. Taylor would also rush for an 8 yard touchdown in the second quarter putting the Pioneers up 36-0 at halftime.

Big Sandy's defensive domination would continue in the third quarter with Wylee Snapp throwing a White Sulphur ball carrier through the back of the end zone for a two point safety. Cooper Taylor would then run the kickoff back for a touchdown aided by an impressive sustained block from Wylee Snapp. Freshman kicker Ty Terry only missed one extra point attempt, contributing 10 points for his team. The Pioneers look to continue their momentum against Roy-Winifred when they play Friday night in Big Sandy.
