Council & Board pool their ideas

Mayor Stiles said that the joint City Council and School Board meeting to discuss a new swimming pool for Big Sandy on June 21 was very successful with both groups thinking more about a new swimming pool.

Most of the Council was at the meeting along with most of the School Board.

"We showed the School Board the diagrams and pictures of pools we have been talking about," said Mayor Stiles. "We also discussed pros and cons of both suggested locations.

One location is very close to the elementary school. The other proposed location is between the cemetery and the high school.

Mayor Stiles said that location talks went into depth even as to if the pool were built close to the elementary school, the school would not have to bus elementary students.

Some Council members had attended a swimming pool workshop, in Missoula and came home with many ideas of getting the very biggest bang for the buck that can be had and gave all the others some new things to think about before even going further in design work for a new pool.

According to Mayor Stiles, the School Board decided they wanted to continue talking about the pool and voted to do so. The next School Board meeting is July 21 and the pool will be on the agenda. The City agreed to have Council members at each Board meeting for a while to help field questions about a new swimming pool that citizens might have.

Mayor Stiles also reminded all that there will be some public meetings when there are things to present to the community having to do with the pool design and associated costs.

Both the City and the School Board are working on an Interlocal agreement that needs to be very specific and strong, so that future School Boards and Councils will have the best direction in running a swimming pool by two separate entities.

"I came out of the meeting very positive about the pool and working together with the School Board," added Mayor Stiles.
