Pioneers open season in Centerville Friday, Belt Saturday

August 31, 2016

Junior Jenna Leader has steadied the defense the past couple of years and was at it again against the Miners making a nice dig to keep the point alive.

It has been a hot and muggy August in the gym for the Lady Pioneers. After watching the American Beach Volleyball duo of Kerri and April battle it out in the heat of Rio, inspiration was in no short supply.

Big Sandy volleyball is very positive with former Pioneer standout volleyball player Shersteen Cline, coming in to coach the team and hopes and dreams are running high.

Coach Cline and the Lady Pioneers headed to Centerville on Friday to kick-off the season. Saturday the team was back in the area and took part in the Belt Tournament.

It sure would have been nice to have that new cruiser bus with AC pumping for the trip, but what doesn't give you heat exhaustion just makes you stronger, so I hear. The girls put up some good numbers on Friday, but did not come home with a win.

Junior Jessica Roth (6) reaches high into the air to make a solid attack against Centerville during the Pioneers season opener Friday.

Jenna Leader had 7 kills and 1 assist and Jaylyn Cline came up with 5 digs, 1 assist, and 3 blocks in the contest.

Saturday the girls also came up empty handed, but posted much closer scores in each of their matches.

The Pioneers barely lost a close set 25-21 to Power in their final match of the tournament.

The Belt Huskies won their own tourney against Centerville in the championship and will be a powerhouse this season.

It takes a winner and a loser to make a good game and these Lady Pioneers have the heart and sportsmanship that makes them winners every time they step foot on the court.

For Labor Day weekend the girls will be at the North Star Tourney, Friday and Saturday. Then get ready to kick off the year for Big Sandy sports as the ladies make their home debut with a match against the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks on Thursday, September 8, at 6 p.m. JV at 4p.m.
