From The Mayor's Desk

June 21, 2017

Mayor Stiles reported that there were two visitors present at the regular June 8 meeting of the City Council.

After the pledge was read and the minutes of the last meeting approved there was a public comment.

An individual has a bunch of lots in Big Sandy and was complaining about taxes and looking for tax relief. There was some discussion about this matter.

The Big Sandy website is up. Mayor Stiles said that anyone wanting to get on the website should go to townofbigsandy.com.

“We are learning and growing with the website,” said Mayor Stiles. “Not everything is up to date but it should get better soon.”

In the Sheriff’s Report it has been noted that there has been a lot of theft mostly in rural areas lately. Pay attention to your property and lock your doors when leaving. Mayor Stiles said that the thieves seem to be opportunists but if they are not caught they will only grow bolder.

At this meeting there was no information from either Bear Paw Development or the Big Sandy engineering firm KLJ.

Mayor Stiles reported that there was some movement in the Rural Development package to improve water carrying capability in Big Sandy. The Big Sandy package has been written and is now in Washington DC waiting for approval.

There was a haying request that was approved for city land at the Gun Club.

The Council is working on a noxious week ordinance. There was discussion about the ordinance and there will be a first reading at the next meeting.

“We are starting to see too many bad weeks and we are acting in accord with Montana Codes,” added Mayor Stiles.

The North Central Water Association wanted Big Sandy to review its water capacity. That was reviewed and stayed the same as it had been before.

The City is still working on ditch and road plans. Some work on roads has already been done and the Mayor said to look for more to be done soon.

Road repair at the elementary school is still on the drawing board. The city is still trying to figure out what to do with the water that accumulates in that area and specifically how to get rid of that water.

Ballots are out for the pool bond issue. They need to be back by June 29. Anyone with any questions should read the pool information in the May 31 issue of “The Mountaineer” according to Mayor Stiles.

Swimming lessons will be given the last two weeks of June and three weeks in July by Connie Reichelt.

Public Works noted that the sewage lagoon is higher than usual.

The water shutoff list is very low. Only eight names were on that list.

Claims and Journal vouchers were paid and the meeting was adjourned.

The next regular City Council meeting will be July 13.
