Lady Pioneers' shooting goes cold at DGS

Stepping back out of league play for a night, the Big Sandy girls hoop squad could not even the season series Friday with Denton-Geyser-Stanford.

Facing a foe who came north earlier this season and spoiled the Lady Pioneers' night, the Big Sandy offense simply could not get enough buckets to fall in a 52-12 romp for the Bearcats in Denton.

"We put up shots," Big Sandy coach Pete Jerrel said. "Just could not get many to fall."

While DGS sank seven three-pointers on the night, the Pioneers were completely shut out from beyond the arc. When they have had success this season, it has largely been with their perimeter shooting.

Bearcats center Mariah Schott topped all scorers with 10 points, including a game-high three treys.

In at least one phase of the game, Big Sandy held an edge. Even though the Pioneers got to the free-throw line at barely half the rate of their foe, they outscored DGS with 6-of-9 shooting from the stripe. Erin Taylor and Amanda Cline were both a perfect 2-of-2 in their respective trips to the line. The Bearcats meanwhile shot a woeful 5-of-16, merely 31 percent at the foul line.

Big Sandy fell to 2-11 for the season. The Lady Pioneers returned to action after press time Monday in a rescheduled contest against Fort Benton. Inclement weather Saturday and road closures forced the postponement.

Big Sandy is scheduled to host Box Elder Friday. Junior varsity starts at 3 p.m. and varsity tips off at 6 p.m. The varsity plays again at 3 p.m. Saturday against North Star in Rudyard.
