“Teamwork Makes The Dream Work”

This past weekend I had the good fortune and opportunity to witness the community of Big Sandy rally together in support of our school and its football program. The kindness and generosity of those in Big Sandy was on full display for the benefit of others. Big Sandy, like most of northeastern Montana on Saturday, experienced 60 plus mph wind gusts. The force of those gusts knocked power out in our community for quite some time.

Within a couple of minutes of the power going out, our Athletic Director gave me a call and said that she had spoken with MHSA and that we were given permission to move forward in hosting our 6 Man Football playoff game against the combined co-op of Custer, Melstone, and Hysham. I had no idea how we would do so but I knew well enough to trust her and to trust in the support that our school has within the community of Big Sandy. Within minutes of arriving at the high school, I had no less than two community members offering our school the use of their generators to run our scoreboard, electronics in the crow’s nest, and our concessions stand. I go into the school for a moment to check on something and when I return we have 5 generators from community members on site as well as a service truck and an off duty electrician on site helping to supervise our efforts as our staff and students were busy continuing to prepare for the upcoming football game and a strong day of concessions sales to help them with their fundraising efforts for their trip to Costa Rica.

I owe the Schwartzback family my sincere thanks for their support for our school and its student-athletes. This appreciation also includes our dedicated Athletic Director, Melanie Schwartzbach, who not only kept our event moving forward but also found the time to assist on a multi vehicle accident as a valued member of the Big Sandy EMS team. I owe many in Big Sandy my sincere thanks and appreciation for positively contributing to what “we” were able to do in working together for the direct benefit of others, including our students and our neighbors.
