The quiet of a Tuesday morning in Big Sandy was shattered around three o’clock when the town’s fire siren rang out. Flames had broken loose in the Owl Pool Hall and quickly spread through the block. Despite the swift arrival of the fire department, there was little hope of saving the Exchange, H.H. Lehfeldt’s building, or the Murtaugh block, which housed the Butler and Cushman barber shop, Pep’s cigar store, and the Owl Pool Hall itself.
