Chouteau County Election 2026

Filing for the June 2, 2026 Federal Primary Election opened on February 17 and closes at 5 pm on March 4, 2026. Open offices in Chouteau County are: Commissioner District 1, County Attorney, Clerk and Recorder, Justice of the Peace, Treasurer, and Sheriff.

The Commissioner District 1 election has been changed this year due to a lawsuit brought by the Chippewa Cree Indians of the Rocky Boy’s Reservation, Tanya Schmockel, and Ken Morsette. Commissioner District 1 now only includes Precinct 5 Rocky Boy and Precinct 9 Big Sandy. Only voters that live in those two Precincts will vote for Commissioner District 1. Please see the map designating the Commission District and precincts.

Per Montana Code 7-4-2104 (2), requirements to run for Commissioner are: A person may not be elected as a member of a Board of County Commissioners unless the person has resided in the county and the district for at least two (2) years immediately preceding the general election.
