  • BIG SANDY CULTURAL CENTER NEWS

    Doug Giebel|Jun 5, 2024

Memorial Day weekend visitors stopped in from Malta, Havre and Great Falls. They enjoyed watching our popular video of the Montana Picnic in New York’s Central Park, took our “tour,” and found books and records in our big collection. A few personal words about this newspaper.T he Mountaineer has been a vital part of our local culture since 1911. One seldom recognized service is the space provided or people to express best wishes and “Thank You” notices of all kinds. “I Wonder” if our children (among others) should be encouraged to give thanks f...

  • The Passing of Ed Jesse and Ray Eugene Giebel

    Doug Giebel and Lowell Svennungsen|Jan 24, 2018

On January 7, 2018 our cousin Edmund Jesse Giebel passed away, and on January 12, 2018, his older brother Ray Eugene Giebel also passed away. They did not want traditional obituaries, so we’re writing a brief rememberance for The Mountaineer record and so their many classmates and friends will know they have left us behind. Ray was a 1950 BSHS graduate, a fine musician (sax and piano), an outstanding chemist who worked for many years at the Rocky Flats facility in Colorado. He and his brother Ed were avid sportsmen. Ray and wife Carmie had f...

    Doug Giebel|Nov 29, 2017

Happy Christmas from the Big Sandy Cultural and Curiosity Center. We had very successful summer arts workshops thanks to Roberta Edwards, Jessica Jaramillo, Dolly Pursley, Carol Smith, Donna Jenkins and Kelly Owen. Soon with funding we’ll be able to install a heating system in the former S&J grocery store so we can finish renovations and operate year round. For years, Big Sandy folks wanted to have a boys and girls club, and with our plans for an after-school program we’ll have our version complete with a research library, more workshops and...

  • Does Big Sandy Have ghosts? Doug Giebel knows

    Doug Giebel|Oct 25, 2017

(With apologies to my late pal Frank Capra) As was usual on the night before Halloween, Precarious Jones sat in his chair before the fireplace with Little Owell, and the two roasted sausages they called Halloweiners over the glowing red coals. Once more, Little Owell asked the mentorial old man to relate the story of a local ghost believed to return at the end of each October to seek out and haunt down certain people. “Tell about the Heelots,” Little Owell said between bites. “If you insist,” said Precarious with a little bitty smile. And he...
