Seventy-five years ago, a young couple met at a little Bible school in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Today, Glenn and his wife are celebrating a milestone that few couples ever reach: three-quarters of a century of marriage. Their story began in Gordon, Nebraska, where Glenn — originally from Culbertson in southwestern Nebraska — caught the eye of a young woman who still remembers his black hair and his eyes. She laughs as she recalls that Glenn remembers her for her blonde hair. Their first dat...

Residents along the Kenilworth Highway near Big Sandy got an unexpected surprise this week when a moose ambled across the two-lane highway, taking its time in true Montana fashion. Drivers slowed to watch as the towering animal strolled across the wide-open prairie, seemingly in no hurry to yield the road. While moose are most often associated with Montana’s rugged mountain ranges, sightings on the prairie are not unheard of. In recent years, wildlife experts have observed moose expanding t...
Managing horticultural landscapes and houseplants in the fall is important for healthy production during the growing season. Below are a few recommendations for Chouteau County gardeners. • Apply protective mulches to perennial beds. • Use a humidifier to maintain humidity for houseplants. • Prune out dead limbs of woody ornamentals. • Do not fertilize or transplant anything after Indigenous Peoples’ Day. • Continue to water landscape plantings (trees, shrubs, and perennials) until the soil freezes. • Apply winter mulch to strawberry beds as so...
1 Years ago October 15, 1925 Montana’s love affair with the automobile showed no sign of slowing, with the state registering 93,500 vehicles by October 1—an increase of more than 16,000 over the prior year. On October 13, a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Gist. Attorney A.G. Waite returned from an extended trip to Illinois, while C.I. Jensen of Great Falls attended a railway telegrapher’s convention. Locals were also abuzz about the upcoming arrival of The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the Grand Opera House. Mrs. C.S. Jackson retur...

It’s that time of year again! The Pearson Pumpkin Patch will be open as many weekends in October as possible, weather permitting 11 am-5 pm. Admission is $5 per person, children 1 and under are free. This week I had the pleasure of visiting with Raynee Gullickson, daughter of Ron and Gay Pearson, to get to know more about the pumpkins and also the family who grows them. Sixteen years ago, the Pearson family planted their first patch. For the first several years, it was a special treat just f...

Another Big Sandy Medical Guild annual rummage sale is in the books. The sale ran from Thursday the 2nd to Friday the 3rd and raised around $11,000. The Guild will use proceeds to purchase equipment for the Medical Center and provide aid toward various projects undertaken by the Medical Center. The event was a success, due to the hard work of the volunteers and the generosity of the Big Sandy Community. Work organizing the sale began on Monday the 29th, with volunteers from the Medical Guild and...
To me 4-H is community, a way for kids to get involved and learn the importance of service and teamwork. 4-H is a chance to practice leadership and be unafraid to volunteer your work; and do a good job. My favorite 4-H memory was this year during our chuckwagon shift at fair. We had so much fun dramatizing everything and proving that just because you are expected to work doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. And getting all the young club members out on the dance floor during the dance prior to the fair. 4-H taught me how to step confidently int...

During National Farmers Union’s Legislative Fly-In this September, 14 Montana Farmers Union members raised concerns about the impact of tariffs, the lack of a full Farm Bill, trade wars and disruptions, as well as advocated for Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling for beef and fully staffed and funded FSA and NRCS offices – putting family farm agriculture in the spotlight for Montana’s Congressional Delegation.
