Pioneers suffer tough loss to Rivals, 57-19 host Augusta today

The Pioneers will head to Augusta Wednesday for their last game in the regular season.

The Pioneers came up against one of the top teams in the state on Friday. If not for the first quarter we could have had them. The Geraldine - Highwood Rivals came out rockin' and had three scores by the end of the first quarter. Any other team would have rolled over, but not our Pioneers. The boys came out in the second quarter and Laurence Allderdice punched one in the end zone. Then one minute later we got the ball back and Brock Proulx passed to Laurence Allderdice for the touchdown and a pass to Clint Darlington for the point after.

At this point the score was 22-13 and hopes were coming back to life on the Big Sandy sidelines. This awoke the Rivals who shut down the Pioneer offense and went back to scoring touchdowns. In the end the score was 57-19. Laurence Allderdice had a runback for a touchdown, one of many for Laurence on the season. He has a real knack for seeing the field on returns and Big Sandy has a very strong special teams squad. Big Sandy held Geraldine - Highwood to 43 until the very end when they got two quick scores. Their running back Spencer is one of the top in the state and we had one of our top defensive players Duke Darlington taking a well deserved rest for an injury. Big Sandy held up very well against such a tough team.

It has been a roller coaster of a year for the men in purple. Starting out 3-0 then losing four in a row to be 3-4 is quite the change in emotions. Hopefully on Wednesday the Pioneers will get another win when they travel to Augusta. This would make us 500 on the season. That would be a pretty good finish for a young team with a new coach. Thank you to the men in purple for a great season and we are proud of the way all the players represented Big Sandy.
