Bear Paw Meanderings

Many years ago I wanted to become a teacher and had gathered enough credits at Northern Montana College to do that. Dr. Harrison Lane was my mentor for Student Teaching and he wanted me to do my Student Teaching with Lawrence Green in Big Sandy. He said the school system was simply wonderful as was Mr. Green. Lane was right on both counts!

I went to Big Sandy and remember well teaching English to Big Sandy kids very interested in learning and I learned a lot from my brief stay with the Big Sandy schools.

That was a wonderful school system.

It still is. To come in sixth in a Montana High School competition is simply a fact that good things are happening in Big Sandy. And all that is done with a School Board who tries to keep costs down and education up.

Consider this. Having a teacher in front of a class of four or five or six just simply makes for a grand educational experience.

I, too, was floored when the Big Sandy School System was attacked by a newspaper from down the road. And, mind you that newspaper is in a town whose high school is not even rated in the best schools of Montana.

Big Sandy wins awards after awards after awards and as far as athletics goes, there is a time for winning and a time for building and we are in a building time which will lead to winning on the field as well but we will still have our science, music, math, and geography awards too.

Not too bad a place to live, in Big Sandy and a very great place to get a good old Montana education.

“Just the best”, that ought to be the motto of the Big Sandy school system!
