The Big Sandy Mountaineer -

The regular season concluded this past Monday for the Big Sandy Pioneer boys and girls basketball teams and now their sights are set on the District 9C tournament which begins today (Wednesday) and runs through Saturday.

The Pioneer boys picked up their second conference win of the season Saturday night with a down to the wire 52-51 win over the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks.

After battling their way to a 27-27 tie during first half action the boys were able to secure the victory with a 18-15 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Ryan Roth led the way for the Pioneers with 13 points including 11-13 from the charity stripe. Freshman Kade Strutz added 12 as did sophomore Brock Proulx.

The boys fell to the North Star Knights to begin the week and were defeated in Turner on Monday. The girls were unable to pick up a win the final weekend of the season.

Both teams will enter the District Tournament as the No. 8 seed. The Big Sandy girls will open against top seeded Box Elder Thursday at 11:00 a.m. The boys begin play today against No. 1 Chinook at 1:00 p.m.
