Chinook, Fort Benton sweep Pioneers as District 9C play gets underway

The Big Sandy Pioneers had a rough go of things on the hardwood this past week as both the girls and boys dropped a pair of contests to the Fort Benton Longhorns on Friday night and then to the Chinook Sugarbeeters on Saturday.

The girls were defeated by the Longhorns 71-19 and then fell to the Sugarbeeters 45-33. The boys dropped a 65-50 decision to Fort Benton and were defeated 66-27 by the Sugarbeeters.

The Pioneer girls saw Fort Benton jump out to a 17-2 first quarter lead and take a 39-8 advantage into the halftime locker room. The girls fought hard but the Longhorn were to much in a 71-19 loss.

Junior Lainey Gregory led the effort with seven markers.

Saturday the Sugarbeeters led 15-4 after one quarter of action. The Pioneers were able to stem the tied the remainder of the contest, winning the second and fourth quarters but still falling 45-33.

Senior Jaylyn Cline scored 16 in the contest, converting 12-14 from the charity stripe.


On the boys side Fort Benton held a three point lead after eight minutes but doubled up the Pioneers in the second to stretch the advantage to 24-20 by intermission.

It was an even contest in the second half with the Longhorns picking up a 65-50 win over the Pioneers.

Junior Ryan Roth scored 23 in the game and sophomore Brock Proulx added 17.

Saturday the Sugarbeeters jumped out to a 20-0 lead early and led 4-10 at the break in defeating the Pioneers 66-27.

Sophomore Kade Strutz led the Pioneer effort with 12 points and Roth finished with eight.

Both the girls and boys records stand at 2-2. They will close out the 2018 stretch of the season this Friday with a road trip that will have them taking on the Denton/Geyser-Stanford Bearcats. Saturday they return home to take on the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds.


The will take the court for the first time in the new year on Friday, January 4 when they will host the North Star Knights in District 9C play.
