Big Sandy Senior Center in Need of Support

January 16, 2019

The Big Sandy Senior Center announced they will be closed on Fridays. Linda Schwarzbach President of the Big Sandy Senior Center Board said, "We are trying to get it open again, but when the participation falls and you can't pencil it out and keep it even; it gets a little scary. It's starting to pick up on the four days. When we start getting a few more people, we will open it up again."

Renee Hansen said, "If we want the senior citizens to be open we can buy a food ticket whether we use it or not." Linda continued by saying, "Buy the meal ticket and just come in on the days you want."

Kent Johnson said, "I've been coming here forever, because they have really good food. And beautiful women!" We all laughed.

"The main thing that's important about the senior citizens is the Nutritional Value for senior citizens which promotes health and reduction of disease. By eating food which is good for them we are reducing malnutrition and reducing social isolation." Being closed on Fridays means isolation for many for three days. However, Friday was the best day allowing employees the need to work four days straight. If they could serve 35-40 people daily, but lately they have only been serving 10-15.

Freezer meals are available for $2.50. They are balanced meals. They freeze meals when they have leftovers. "Right now, we have Selmers Chicken, Meatballs, Pork Roast, Baked Ziti, Polish and Sauerkraut, and Pork Chops."

Besides on-site meals and frozen meals, they do deliver meals to anyone who meets the eligibility of being home bound for whatever reason, age doesn't matter. They get reimbursed funding for anyone over the age of 60. Last summer the Senior Center took a large financial cut and they have added a salad bar and frozen meals to help offset their loss.

Linda wanted to thank all the people who already support the center financially. So many bring food to the center. The center has a warm friendly atmosphere built by friends. And friends will keep it open.
