The Value of Plays in Big Sandy

lays give children and adults a creative outlet that maybe they didn't know they had in them.

The Big Sandy Theater Presents "Bed Time Stories as told by Dad who Messed it Up". This will be Big Sandy's first play for many years being presented on April 27 at 6:00 PM and April 28th at the Big Sandy High School.

A handful of adults and a wide age range of children have worked for two months to present a play for our community and besides entertainment there are other reason such great efforts need to be rewarded.

The Missoula Children's Theater recently presented a play working with 42 kids for four days to present The Emperor's New Clothes. I had an opportunity to visit with both of the directors. Collectively they have been directing children's plays for 26 years. Joe has been involved with plays since high school. "I was just planning on being an actor at this point, but there is a lot more reward at the end of my week now. Feeling you are making a difference, seeing the ideas formulate with the kids. Teaching comes before directing.

"We go week after week to different towns all over. Because we have different kids, a different cast, each week, with different attitudes, different energy, and a different outlook. "We really have a different show each week. It's fun."

I asked them what is the value, to a small community to bring a play in. "That's a hard question. We provide a chance for a group of kids to do public speaking. They learn how to present themselves. We make them do a show in four days. They don't think like the adults think, which it is impossible to do a show in a week. They believe we can. Children learn to be self-disciplined. It helps children to think creatively." We don't have enough time to teach creativity in this day and age. "It's learning we can think differently. It's really problem solving-a creative thinker. It will teach confidence and it helps to understand stories being read or told."

Learning can be fun! Being in front of people can be rewarding. Learning you have value and are worth listening too.

For $2.00 a per person Big Sandy could support the further development of these values and expand in our community more creative efforts. We need to show our support by packing out the auditorium.
