December 4, 2019

The Big Sandy Science Olympiad teams competed at the state event in Bozeman on November 25th-26th. The junior high team placed 24th out of 51 teams and the high school placed 22nd out of 47 teams.

In the junior high division, Reinhard Bold and Lane Demontiney placed first out of 51 teams in the Water Quality event. They were required to build and calibrate their own salinometer using household materials and then answered questions about water quality testing and environmental pollution. Hunter Moore and Severin Heimbigner placed 5th in Circuit Lab, in which they were required to answer questions about electrical circuits and build a circuit to the competition's specifications. Hunter and Severin also placed 8th in Mousetrap Vehicle, in which they had to design and build a car powered by a mouse trap that could be configured to travel a specified distance at the competition. They had to test the vehicle several times to determine how far they had to "wind up" their car in order to go those distances. Jake Darlington and Lane Demontiney placed 10th in Crime Busters; an event that is patterned after the popular TV show CSI.

In the high school division, Abriana Blanton and Jozlyn Baumann won silver medals in the Write It-Do It event. Hope Gasvoda and Abriana Blanton won 3rd place in Anatomy and Physiology. Amy Gasvoda and Hope Gasvoda placed 7th in Astronomy.
