Big Sandy Schools have another Tool to help keep students safe

December 25, 2019

Recently all teachers have been certified on-line and have practice using Reflex Protect a self-defense spray. It is a new tool in the safety box to help keep students and teachers safe. It is often used for riot control by police. Reflex Protect is an effective non-lethal spray.

The Reflex shoots 15 feet and has a direct spray. Most pepper spray product has a single stream, this has two. It also has a patented design making it less likely to be accidentally deployed. "you don't want to be sprayed with this," said Kelly Haaland, Big Sandy Superintendent. The spray hits strategically-a straight stream. It is more potent than bear spray. "Once sprayed, it has to be deactivated." Unlike conventional pepper sprays, Reflex Protect® uses Presidia Gel™ (CS) that sticks to what it hits, meaning there is little risk of cross-contamination to an innocent person or the surrounding area.

When I talked to four-grade school teachers, they were glad to have a defensive tool. "Just in case there is an intruder or active shooter." "We won't just be a victim, but we have a defensive tool to use."

"I think it's a good idea."

"It provides us with another tool to keep our kids and ourselves safe, and hopefully, we NEVER have to use it."
