Aftermath of Quarantine for Students

April 1, 2020

For the past few weeks, the students at the Big Sandy Public Schools have been attending school from home. Students and teachers are now becoming comfortable with google classroom and their emails. Between the students, teachers, and parents everyone has a lot of adjustments to come by. Everyone is trying their best to keep on with the school year in the most effective way possible.

For the high school and junior high students there have been many mixed feelings over the situation. High schoolers seem to always be complaining about going to school and wanting to stay home, but when faced with the situation there’s more to it. The last couple months of the school year are the busiest time of the year. There are spring sports, carnival, prom, adult prom, the rotary banquet, state music and district festival, the senior trip, and graduation. Most of these events have now been postponed and may be canceled. Many students have said they are enjoying being home and not having to wake up early for school. They also enjoy all the free time, but they miss the events and sports that come with school. Especially for the class of 2020, this has taken a toll. The seniors are afraid of not getting to live their last memories of high school. Hopefully, these events will be restored, and the seniors can live their last experiences at the Big Sandy High School.

When it comes to online schooling there are a lot of difficulties that it comes with. There are many high school students who participate in dual credit and digital academy classes. Dual credit is an online opportunity for high school students to enroll in college classes online and gain college credits. Any student at the age of sixteen can sign up for these classes and many take the opportunity. Digital academies are high school online classes offered to schools that don’t offer certain classes. These classes include foreign language classes, cooking classes, and much more. With high school students attending these classes, they have some idea on how to deal with schooling online. So, keeping up with due dates, finding extra sources to explain criteria, and being able to reach out to teachers virtually can be easier to adjust to for these students.

Now, when it comes to elementary students there is a whole different attitude. Younger students enjoy school more because they get time out of the house and to enjoy with their friends in class and at recess. Now that grade school students are forced to stay home, they don’t get to see their friends and they still have to do their homework. Parents are trying hard to adjust to the situation and make sure their children don’t fall behind in school. “Getting my kid to focus is probably the hardest part of schooling from home”, said one mom helping her fifth grader from home. Elementary students are using google classroom from home on their chrome books that the school provides for them. The elementary teachers are doing the best they can to provide lessons for their students. Hopefully all the young students of Big Sandy Public Schools can learn the best they can in this situation.

Everyone is trying their best to learn how to properly attend school from home. The students are happy to have the support from their parents and teachers and that is making the situation a lot easier on everyone. The Covid-19 Virus has brought a lot of tragedy to the families across the world who have lost people from it, and hopefully this quarantine can stop the spread of this virus.
