Getting By

April 15, 2020

This article is not meant to bring more doom and gloom to the current situation we all are managing. However, given what we are experiencing and seeing around the world, nation and state, some may have had these thoughts. The “what if” thoughts surrounding becoming ill, possibly terminal, and how would my family and medical providers know what my health care wishes are. I have written articles on this before, however, a new publication has become available.

MSU Extension Specialist, Marsha Goetting, along with legal and health care partners from across the state put together a 24-page document explaining a Health Care Power of Attorney for Montanans. This document includes a worksheet and forms to appoint a health care agent(s) and assist others in understanding your health care preferences.

Perhaps you have had the conversations with your family and that is great. You are certainly on the right track. Did you know, in addition to sharing your wishes verbally, they need to be in writing. A written legal document will ensure your preferences are clear for those making the decisions.

The publication can be found online at https://store.msuextension.org/publications/FamilyFinancialManagement/EB0231ADA.pdf. Our office is also able to send printed copies. Please do not hesitate to give us a call.
