Big Sandy School Board met to discuss and finalize a letter of approval

December 30, 2020

I attended the School Board meeting on the internet, which is available to anyone who would like to participate in the meeting and not attend. This is a great option. Thankfully I was reminded by Darin Genereux to turn off my microphone. Guests can only make a brief statement before the agenda items, after which we can only watch and listen to the board.

First on the agenda is Parker Proulx, the representative from the student council. He told the board that the student council was having a small fundraiser, selling Christmas Candy Canes with messages on them.

Some maintenance projects are ongoing. The upstairs office that hasn’t been used for some time, except for storage, is being redone for a counseling room.

Travis Bauman reported to the board that the school had received a $75,000 grant for technology funding over the next five years.

The Senior class requested the board approve their class trip to Orlando, Florida. After a brief discussion, the board approved the class trip. They still need to raise a little bit more money but are confident they will be able to reach it; if not, the students will make up the difference themselves.

Melanie Schwarzbach’s reported on the basketball season and the spectator policy. See separate article for information concerning basketball season.

At future board meetings, they have invited the booster club to give a monthly report.

The school board went into a private meeting as they did the superintendent’s evaluation. Upon return, they offered him a two-year contract with a 2% raise the first year and a 1% raise the second year.

Principal Heather Wolrey reported that It’s still too early to determine if there can be a prom this year due to COVID. Remote learning will continue for the 2nd semester. She also reported the Governor-Elect might have different COVID-19 regulations. “We all want to keep our kids safe and learning.”

Superintendent Kelly Howland reported they have an URGENT need for Rural Route drivers and also for activity drivers. We could have four routes, but only three drivers, sometimes only two. Currently, drivers get paid $16.00 an hour.
