Wrestlers bring momentum home for friendly crowd

The high school wrestlers from Big Sandy are on a roll.

That’s good timing, coming into the week in which they will get their one chance for the year to compete in their home gym.

A trio of Pioneers, combining with Fort Benton as a coop team, competed in Conrad on Friday and Shelby on Saturday. The joint squad had a scheduled match Tuesday after press time in Lewistown. They will next hit the mat at 6 p.m. Thursday for their only home meet of the season. Bayley Genereux and Brady Pleninger will be honored as graduating seniors with a special presentation.

“We were very competitive both days … over the weekend,” Big Sandy coach Tucker Taylor said. “All three (active) wrestlers are improving and competing well at their weight classes.”

Reinhard Bold, Genereux, and Pleninger each posted a 3-1 record during the weekend. Each received their only loss at the hands of Columbia Falls wrestlers on Friday night in Conrad, Taylor said. Genereux’s three wins all came by first period pins, Taylor said, and Bold won by way of a pin and two major decisions.

Pleninger recorded three falls over the weekend as well, Taylor said, defeating two Fairfield wrestlers and a Shelby Coyote.

Tannin Baumann, having compiled a 6-1 record for the season, “did not wrestle this weekend and we hope to have him back at some point in the season,” Taylor said.

Freshman Bold, a 138 pounder, is off to an impressive start, at 9-3 for the season.

Genereux, at 145, is hopeful to make his return to the state tournament and has compiled a 10-5 match record in 2021.

Pleninger, at 205, improved to 7-6 for the season after the weekend mixers.

Taylor said he hopes “to have plenty of fans in attendance to support our wrestlers” when Big Sandy hosts Thursday evening. The Fort Benton portion of the squad had their moment in front of the local spotlight earlier last week, with a Tuesday night mixer in the county seat.
