Big Sandy Schools starts as normal

September 1, 2021

The day before school started and I was visiting the FE Miley grade school for the open house. She was in the third grade and recognized me and just needed to tell me about everything she bought for school. She was so excited she had a new pair of shoes that sparkled. She wanted to know if I wanted to take a picture of her shoes for the paper.

I went to the school and took that picture because sometimes it's this kind of story that is the most important. We are back to school! And once again, in school, not going to school over the internet. Each child was excited to see their friends again and told me they were even happy to be learning!

I Interviewed Mrs. Moore's 3rd-grade class. I was thanking Mrs. Moore for the opportunity when one of the students told me they thought their teacher's name was Smores. That made me smile. She said to them that is because she adds an S for her first name, Sheri, before her last name Moore.

I love asking them what they like to learn. They raise their hands almost immediately, and like usual, the first child I ask doesn't have an answer, although his hand is up. He has to think for a minute. Art seemed to be a very popular class, but so was Math, which I was happy to hear. She has several math students in her class. I'll follow up on that during the year to see if they were just copying each other or if they really have that many math lovers.

One little girl had to show me what she was reading because that is her favorite class. She got up to show me the book and said, "I'm at chapter nine out of 30 chapters!" The book's name was Addix Among the Hidden by Peterson, which looked like an excellent book to read.

One student told me she loves doing special projects. Another told me PE was her favorite-so; we have an athlete there as well.

And we have one that loves working in the chrome books. For those of you who don't know, that is what the individual computers are called that each student receives.

And then "I love music." I was happy to hear that as well. I asked if anyone loved science only to learn they don't teach science in k-2nd grade. They start science in the third grade. There was one girl, though, who told me, "I like science; I was just too scared to raise my hand." I laughed because she isn't afraid to do anything.

And lastly, one told me, "I like looking at the minions." Mrs. Moore has yellow minions in her classroom.

I hope to follow this class this year and learn what is exciting for them.
