Big Sandy Board of Trustees discuss Gym Access

January 26, 2022

The last school board meeting was well attended for the discussion about gym access.

The student Council reported they would have a Valentine Dance for Junior High Students.

The Big Sandy Booster Club reported purchasing a blow-up screen to use at school functions, including outdoor events. They also purchased a button maker. They said that some of Earl Sluggett's memorial money would be used to buy a sign showing how to get to the Big Sandy High School. The high school English class will have hot cocoa with grade school students.

The water break at grade school was an enormous mess, and with the help of several people, they were able to get the students back to school quickly; however, today, Kelly Haaland said they found a drip.

There was a brief comment concerning the Model Safe Return to School and Continuity of Service. COVID-19 documents are still required, and Kelly Haaland said, "Angel is still doing her thing."

A discussion was held concerning the Job Description Handbook. Mainly how are evaluations completed? And by who?

The board voted to Increase substitute teacher pay to keep up with inflation to $90 and $100.

An Interlocal Agreement with the town of Big Sandy for Municipal was tabled to allow for words to be changed and enable lawyers to read the agreement.

Two volunteer Teachers were approved: Robert Nelson and Jay Worrall.

The Auditor's made two recommendations after the last audit. One was to create a flex fund account and rename Activity Account #13 to Senior Project Account.

The biggest discussion of the night was the Annex and Gym access. In prior years adults were allowed fobs allowing them access to the annex and the gym. They were required to sign a release form and, during the day, needed to sign in at the office. This year Glen Terry read the following wording to those present. The insurance company "strongly advises against parents or students having a key to the gym, meaning school staff would need to be responsible for the traffic in and out of the building during open gym times." They did allow for discussion asking all in attendance to email their suggestions to the school so that they could make policy concerning attendance to an open gym. Several people spoke to their concern about not using the school building like before. One suggestion was to get more subs among the parents, which would allow them to be on staff and allow for more personnel with proper clearance to supervise the gym area.

The gym floor is still not fixed. The flooring company will need to redo the finish on the floor this summer. The problem was created by either one of two things. One would be that the floor was not finished properly or the floor product finish was inferior.

The quote for the elementary kitchen flooring was approved.

The Superintendent, Principal, and Business Manager/Clerk were evaluated in a closed executive session.
