Senior National Honor Society members: l to r: Angie Sant, Lance Rutledge, Jaycee Worrell, Eva Wagoner, Cody Boone, and Mattie Gasvoda

Recently inducted into the Big Sandy Chapter of the National Honor Society were Eva Wagoner, Cody Boone, and Mattie Gasvoda. Jessie Jaramillo, Big Sandy High School's art teacher, is the sponsor of the Big Sandy National Honor Society. Membership in the Honor Society is an honor and should be recognized. She told me that she also has the student write a letter of interest and get a letter of recommendation, and once they are inducted into the program, they must complete 50 hours of community service.

The following criteria to become a member were taken from the Constitution of the Big Sandy National Honor Society, which was given to Big Sandy by the National Organization in Washington DC: "Membership in Big Sandy Honor Society is based upon scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Membership shall be known as active and graduate. The graduate members have no vote. Active members become graduate members at graduation."

"To be eligible for election to membership, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period equivalent to one semester in Big Sandy High School and follow the college preparation. Inductees must complete three high school semesters and submit a current resume addressing leadership, community service, and character. Candidates eligible for election shall have a minimum three-point five cumulative grade point average. All students who can rise in scholarship to or above such standard may be admitted to candidacy for election to membership. Their eligibility shall then be considered further on their service, leadership, and character."
