Poetry from the High School students

December 6, 2023

The following is a poem written by four Sophomore boys in answer to Nikki Giovanni’s poem “Woman” in which she uses five different pairs of images to describe what the woman wants from her “man.” But he will not be what she is hoping for, no matter how hard she works at the relationship. So, she moves on.

Wes Cox, Dolan Sunchild, Ty Terry, and Travis Wilford studied her point of view, and then they collaborated to write their poem from the man's point of view, using the same format with their original pairs of images. Enjoy!

Man

I am an astrologist

Looking for a shooting star

But the woman that wants me

Is but a faded star

I am a fish

Looking for room to roam

She is an ocean bay

But I want an open ocean

I am a snake in the desert

Looking for a cool spot to rest

She is a cactus with shade

But I dream for a cool cave

She is a blueprint wanting to be built

But I am not a builder

I want a sunrise

But she is a sunset

She became a shooting star

That lit up the night

And flew off

Left me looking in my telescope

Wondering why I didn’t choose her
