Homecoming Race or Ride on tap for Homecoming 2025

This summer's Big Sandy Homecoming activities will include some fun options for locals who enjoy athletic activities. Registration is now open for the Color Fun Run and the Bike Ride. Both events will take place on Saturday, June 21st. The Color Run begins at 8 AM, while the Bike Ride begins at 9 AM. A link to register for the Color Fun Run can be found on the Big Sandy Homecoming 2025 Facebook page. Registration for the Bike Ride will happen on the day of the event, though there is a dedicated Facebook event that has more information. You can also indicate you're interested in participating. In addition, individuals can register for the Color Fun Run using the QR code on advertising fliers currently posted around town.

The Color Fun Run is being organized by Mary Merrill, who works at Big Sandy Schools, and is the president of the Big Sandy Barracudas Swim Team. It is the second time the event will be a part of the homecoming celebration. The fun run is 2.9 miles, which participants can run or walk. Throughout the fun run, racers will pass stations where non-toxic color powder will be thrown on the runners as they pass. This results in runners competing the race looking quite colorful. I participated in the last fun run and still have my shirt, which was dyed multicolored by the powder used in the race. Photos from the 2015 Fun Run can be seen on the Big Sandy Homecoming page. Each participant will receive a bandana with their registration. Registration for the event is $25 per person. The first time was 10 years ago at the 2015 Homecoming, where the event was a very popular event. Kids 5 and under are free. Participants are welcome to bring strollers for their kids. The proceeds raised by the registration fee will be divided three ways: To cover the expenses associated with running the event, with the remaining funds divided between the Big Sandy Barracuda Swim Team and the Big Sandy Swimming Pool Fundraiser.

The Bicycle Ride is being organized by Mike Vielleux, who graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1981. This will be the first time the bike race will be held at Homecoming, though it was organized as a part of the 2020 Homecoming and was ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic. At the time, the event was organized Mike O'Malley, though Mike Vielleux helping out. This year, he took on organizing the full event. The ride itself will be 33 miles of riding on paved roads, specifically down Judith Landing and back.

Returning alumnus Mike Vielleux went on from Big Sandy to graduate from Montana State with a degree in 1986 with a BS in Ag Engineering. He then obtained an MS in Civil Engineering from New Mexico State University in 1991. He currently lives in the suburbs of Austin, where he has resided for the past 15 years. He was an avid runner for years, but had to give it up due to injuries and switched to cycling.
