In October, a group of Massachusetts teenagers running an Instagram account called “Boys With A Bus” built a four-story raft on the shores of the Missouri River and embarked on a 5-day adventure through the Big Sky wilderness. Along the way, they met Dan Schrock, who invited them to visit Big Sandy High School and share the tale of their adventure. Over the last few months, the Mountaineer has relayed the story of these young men and their modern Huckleberry Finn style journey. Thus far, we hav...
Dry Matter Losses of Hay from Field to Feeding This article was written by Dennis Cash, retired MSU Extension Service forage specialist. The winter feeding is likely your single largest ranch expense. Reducing hay waste can save you money. Hay losses at feeding on most ranches averages about one fourth, but can easily approach half. During good haying conditions and with proper storage, most losses to alfalfa or alfalfa-grass hays can be minimized. Dense large round or rectangular bales are widely used, but significant losses occur when these a...

Hello Friends, We wanted to share an update on the dryland potatoes we grew as part of the Pioneer Producers program this summer. These are the potatoes that the grade school students came out to learn about and help harvest. They have been making their way into the Big Sandy School Lunch Program for a couple weeks now, and on Thursday the 19th, they were made into some tasty french fries! Josh had the chance to visit with the grade school kids on Thursday as lunch was served. The 4th graders...

Students from FE Miley Elementary School were treated to a brief visit from Santa Claus Thursday morning for their last day of classes before Christmas break. At 8:30 AM, the jolly old elf met students at the door with his trademark laugh and candy canes. Saint Nick’s appearance was part of a holiday tradition at FE Miley for the last day of school before Christmas break. Students gathered at the High School theater to watch a movie, eat popcorn, and enjoy the morning together. The High S...

Twas the night Before break by Piper Phillips "Twas the night before break, when all through the halls, All students were anxiously climbing the walls; The lockers were open-kids combing their hair, In hopes that some snowflakes would soon fill the air; Kids were excited to sleep late in their beds, While visions of carefree days danced in their heads: With people in the office and I in my class We just settled down and let our brains rest at last, When outside the room there arose such a...
This June our lives were forever changed. My husband was home sick with our 2-year-old and I had brought our garbage to the dump in town for our weekly trash run. As is Drga tradition, I looked around in the dumpster to make sure there weren’t any obvious treasures that were easy to reach. That was when I found it: a pink Barbie Power Wheels car with purple accents. (We are talking about a little motorized vehicle for kids). “I bet my husband can fix this”, I thought to myself (I am married to a very handy man). That was that. I loaded it in...

By Rachel Baumgarn & Laci LaBuda The recent blood drive at Christ Lutheran Church saw another successful donation day, with community members stepping up to support vital medical needs. Scott LeFurgey was honored for reaching a significant milestone, earning his two-gallon donation pin, demonstrating long-term commitment to community health. While the drive was productive, organizers noted a challenge with appointment no-shows and are encouraging more reliable participation in upcoming drives. The 4-H Sunshine Snippers once again provided...

The year 2024 has been positive for the senior center, although it has also brought some sadness. We have been able to offer a wider variety of dishes on our menu, along with homemade baked goods, and engaging activities such as bingo nights and pinochle. We've made new friends and mourned the loss of a few; may they rest in peace. We set a goal to acquire a generator for the facility, similar to the one at the hospital, and we are very close to reaching this goal. We hope to raise the...

I say it every year the grade school's Christmas Concert is my favorite. This year it was obvious it's a favorite for many. The auditorium was packed! The parking lot was full with cars parked lining the street. It started with the 4th grade Recorders! They played A Merry Minuet. Sometime I'd like to hear a song a know so I could recognize it. It's so much fun! The 5th grade band played three songs. I really wanted to hear the 5th grade band this year, because my granddaughter is playing the...

The Big Sandy Christmas Stroll this weekend was a well-attended event. The weather was wonderful, too, so it was easy to go from one event to the other, and the kids enjoyed that! Craft projects for children took place at The Bakery, The Big Sandy Library, and The Club Bar. All three bars had a contest on a special holiday drink, and The Club won. I ate the best sandwich from Pep's: Caribbean pork. It was slow-roasted citrus pork with caramelized onions, garlic aioli, pickled jalapenos, romaine...

Over the weekend, news broke of a possible significant archeological discovery in the Antalya province of Turkey. The limestone sarcophagus could possibly have been the original burial site of the fourth century Christian bishop, Saint Nicholas. Saint Nick is best known for the character his life story elements evolved into: Santa Claus. The recent discovery is interesting on its own, but the story of the bishop and how it evolved into something so different is fascinating as well. The...

We have exciting news from our subterranean greenhouse! About 18 months ago, Bob planted this banana tree in his greenhouse and we finally spotted it's first flower in late October. It's quite incredible, especially considering that this means we may have fresh, homegrown bananas soon in Montana. These photos were taken in order once every week since it was first spotted. Just magical! Stay tuned as we watch it (hopefully) grow some bananas. "...
Christmas is about gifts, following the giving of gifts by the wise man. The Vendor fair at city hall all day Saturday during the Christmas stroll is a perfect time to keep some of our money in our community. Spend your money here and support the community. It’s the perfect day to buy all your gifts from the vendors or certificates from local businesses. I was given the following list of local vendors working for months to get things ready to help you find your gifts for the season. It includes Glenn Braun Jewelry, which I love! Crafty P...
