What a dilemma! What story of all the front page stories in "the Mountaineer" for 2015 was the best story? Honorable mentions included the cattle crossing the Missouri, School goes to a four day week, KFBB, Kamut, Housing in Big Sandy, Tavie Kipp comes to Montana, Reinholt Bitz's story of World War II, the Cooks Thanksgiving Roundup and Knife, Gun, Family, Friends, and Wilderness, the story of Bob Nelson's hunt in Alaska this fall. Now, of course if you measured stories that were important to...

  • Picture of the year

    Robert Lucke|Jan 6, 2016

This year's picture of the year was the mountain lion swimming over to a boat full of people. The picture was taken by Janine Jorgenson at Fourchette Bay in western Fort Peck. We knew that the picture was of a mountain lion, not a tiger, Nevertheless it was too good a chance to run with that wonderful Blake poem, "The Tyger" It fit the picture perfectly and in one stanza asks the profound question, "When the stars threw down And water'd heaven with their tears: Did he smile his work to see? Did...

  • January for National Blood Donor Month

    Guest Column|Jan 6, 2016

This January, during National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross encourages people to roll up their sleeves to give blood to help maintain a sufficient blood supply for patients. Since 1970, National Blood Donor Month has been observed in January to not only honor blood and platelet donors, but also to help increase donations during the winter months. Maintaining a sufficient blood supply for patients is difficult at this time of year because extreme winter weather and seasonal illnesses often impact donor turnout. Karla Essmiller...

Director, Hill County Council on Aging Originally I received a call from a State of Montana employee who said that there was a senior citizen who had serious difficulties due to his diabetes and some other problems. The gentleman would be coming to the Northern Montana Care Center and they would like me to visit and see what I could do to help him. And so I began my 11 year association with Charlie Tordik. Those years were in knowing a unique, intelligent, feisty man who never thought he had...

In early December a report came out from the Lippard-Clawiter Foundation saying they had distributed some $421,916 in funds to Chouteau County organizations needing funds in 2015. Since the Lippard Foundation got its start in 1980 and turned into the Lippard-Clawiter Foundation in 1995, almost seven million dollars has helped various organizations though out Chouteau County! It is like a giant Santa Claus sitting in a corner of Chouteau County, just waiting for someone to ask and that Santa will do as much as possible to make sure the...

    The Montana Stockgrower, Centennial Edition|Dec 30, 2015

Reprinted from "The Montana Stockgrower, Centennial Edition" Who hasn't seen the small painting of the almost dead cow surrounded by wolves? That tiny painting made Charles Russell famous around Montana and the whole west. Here is a story in "the Montana Stockgrower" about that painting. "A little over four decades ago, the great Montana stockman, Wallis Huidekoper, presented to the Association a small postcard sized watercolor by Charles M. Russell which was to become one of its most highly...

Dear Residents of Chouteau County, As 2015 come to a close, I would like to comment on all the libraries in the Chouteau County Library System. This includes the communities of Big Sandy, Fort Benton, Geraldine and Highwood. These ladies work hard all year long to provide each of the branches with programs and resources, not just books. The Chouteau County Library Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3). The foundation supplements the needs of the library not covered by county budget. As many of you know, we are currently building a new library...

The Wastewater Treatment project was discussed. What C and C Construction is working on now will take three to four weeks depending on the weather. There is a line that flows up instead of down. That is being corrected. There is survey work being done on the west side of town for future water lines providing the project goes through. No one was at the City C...

  • Coach Ronnie Simpson takes on BSHS Basketball program

    Robert Lucke|Dec 2, 2015

Most everyone in Big Sandy, and adjoining Class C schools, knows that Ronnie Simpson has taken the head coaching job for Big Sandy Varsity boys and girls. That seems sort of overwhelming but then Ronnie Simpson is no ordinary coach. His assistants are Cheryl Strutz for the girls and Pete Jerrel for the boys. Simpson modestly says of coaching his two teams, "I am just going to do it. It is simply two practices and it is similar things we do for both teams." And if that wasn't enough, Simpson is...

  • New Library Update

    Robert Lucke|Dec 2, 2015

Marla Ray, representing library fund raisers, Dee Pribyl and Ann Quinn were in “The Mountaineer” this week updating the fund raising efforts for the new library. Since construction has started on the project, it is good to know that the group does not have a long way to go with fundraising to reach their goal. Matter of fact, they need to raise short of $90,000 with a couple of grants in the works that would lower that to about $70,00. The group is still working on grants as well. A grant for around $20.000 has just come in. The fun...
