Big Sandy Adult Education Sewing Classes
September 18, 25 and October 2, 2017
5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
The sewing classes will include learning the parts of the sewing machine, sewing tools, fabric information, using a rotary cutter and mat and then sewing some simple projects leading up to elastic waist pants, capris or shorts. We will be using non-stretch fabric for these first three classes. If there is interest, we can add future classes to work with other types of fabrics and other sewing techniques.
Our first project will be a pillow case. Your fabric choices should include a medium weight non-woven (does not stretch) fabric. Flannel is a great choice. The success and ease of your project will be dependent on the appropriate selection of fabric. Please do not pick knit or special occasion fabrics. The amount of fabric you will need will be: 3/4 yard (27 inches) of main fabric, 1/3 yard (12 inches) of cuff fabric and 2-4 inches contrast strip (optional). Prewashing the fabric just as you would wash the finished pillowcase is best to avoid shrinkage after it is made.
What else to bring: sewing machine and necessary accessories (electric cord, foot control, general use presser foot, new replacement needles), straight pins, cloth tape measure, hem gauge, removable marking pen or pencil, sharp large fabric cutting scissors, a seam ripper and thread.
