The Big Sandy Mountaineer -

The Big Sandy varsity boys basketball team began the new year by picking up a huge win for the program, taking down the Box Elder Bears 58-50.

The Pioneers trailed 11-10 after one and 29-28 by intermission. The Bears extended their advantage to 42-37 entering the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Ryan Roth would help lead the Pioneers back by knocking down a triple and converting three of four free throws down the stretch.

Sophomore Clint Darlington scored all five of his points in the final stanza and the Pioneers outscored the Bears 21-8 over the final eight minutes to secure a 58-50 win.

Roth led the team with 22 points while sophomore Brock Proulx added 19.

The Big Sandy girls were defeated 75-27. Senior Cally Demontiney scored 15 points in the contest.

Saturday the teams took on the North Star Knights as they continued District 9C play.

The girls fell 45-4 in the first game of the night and the boys were defeated 57-39 in the night cap.

Proulx led the boys with 14 markers and Roth added 13 in the loss.

The Pioneers will face the Turner Tornadoes on Friday and will take on the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks Saturday.
