Big Sandy junior Lainey Gregory attacks the Bearcat defense

The Big Sandy Pioneer boys and girls basketball teams were at home on Friday night as they hosted the Denton/Geyser-Stanford Bearcats in a non-conference basketball game. Both teams played well but fell short of picking up a win. The girls were defeated by a score of 67-45 while the boys came up short 62-45.

Saturday afternoon they were in Hays to take on the Thunderbirds as they stepped back into District 9-C play. The boys suffered another loss, falling 84-57 while the girls were defeated 71-31.

In their game Friday night the Pioneers jumped out to a early 14-12 lead after eight minutes of action only to see the Bearcats turn the tide and take a 24-22 lead into the halftime locker room.

D/G-S then doubled the Pioneers up in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 40-30 and left with a 60-45 non-conference win over the Pioneers.

The Pioneers were led in the contest by junior Brock Proulx's 21 points. Junior Ryan Roth added 20. Proulx and Roth each hit three 3-pointers in the contest.

In the girls game the Pioneers turned in a strong defensive effort early trailing 9-6 after eight minutes. The offenses would open the game up in the second quarter with the Bearcats outscoring Big Sandy by eight to take a 33-22 halftime lead.

The girls will get back in the contest with a strong third-quarter and enter the fourth quarter trailing 44-36.

Down the stretch he Bearcats were just too much as they secured a 65-47 win over the Pioneer girls. Junior Amanda Cline scored eight in a contest while also pulling down 13 rebounds. Senior Jaylyn Cline added 20 points in a contest for the girls.

Saturday in Hays the boys took an early 11-6 lead over the Thunderbirds but a dismal second-quarter had them entering the halftime locker room down 26-17.

Thunderbirds extended their advantage to 12 in the third quarter outscoring the Pioneers 27-15 and then cruised through the fourth to take a 84-57 win over Big Sandy.

Roth led the Pioneers with 19 points, Proulx added 14 and 8th grader Crawford Terry 12 in the game.

On the girls side of things Big Sandy got off to a slow start in the contest as they trailed 22-5 at the end of the first and 42-13 at the halftime intermission. The girls were defeated 71-31 by the Thunderbirds.
