The MSU Extension non-soil agricultural fumigation manual for private applicators (EB0229) is available at the Chouteau County Extension office. Many fumigants are classified among the most toxic pesticides currently available for use. Accidents are rare but when they do occur, they can result in the fatality of applicators and bystanders. The disparity between fumigants and other pesticides is significant, including personal protective equipment, the use of monitoring devices, determining dosage, etc. The manual was created as an aid in understanding these differences to decrease non-target poisonings, while assisting applicators in delivering a fumigation that maximizes efficacy. The manual is a guide to understanding the product labels of common non-soil fumigants used by farm applicators. Please note that it is an applicators responsibility to read and follow the pesticide product label language which may be updated or differ among products.

Authors of EB0229 are Amy Bowser (MSU Pesticide Education Technician), Cecil Tharp (MSU Pesticide Education Specialist), Stephen Vantassel (Vertebrate Pest Specialist from the Montana Department of Agriculture), and Kevin Wanner (MSU Cropland Entomology Specialist). The Chouteau County Extension office has copies available free of charge. The Extension office is in the green building next to the Chouteau County Courthouse.
